How to save for a vacation by your departure date

To save for a vacation, price the whole trip, subtract what you already have, and divide by the months until you leave. A $2,700 trip nine months away needs $300 a month. Build the total from flights, lodging, food, activities and a small buffer, so nothing surprises you.

How to save for a vacation

  1. Price the trip. Add up flights, lodging, food, local transport, activities and a buffer.
  2. Pick the departure date. Count the whole months between today and the day you leave.
  3. Subtract what you already have. Take away any money you have already put aside for the trip.
  4. Divide by the months left. The result is how much to save each month.
  5. Log each deposit. Record contributions as you make them and recheck the plan if prices change.

How much should I save for a vacation?

Save the full cost of the trip, not a guess. Break it into categories, and add a buffer of a few percent for costs you miss. The worked example below prices a $2,700 trip.

Example trip budget
CategoryBudget
Flights$900
Lodging$1,000
Food$450
Activities$250
Buffer$100
Total$2,700

How much do I save each month for a trip nine months away?

$2,700 divided by 9 months is $300 a month. Saving weekly instead, divide by about 39 weeks for roughly $69 a week. If you already have $450 set aside, the remaining $2,250 is $250 a month.

What if I book flights before I have saved enough?

Treat each booking as its own dated amount. If flights are due in three months, that is a $900 goal due in 3 months, or $300 a month for the first stretch, and the rest of the trip can follow on a later deadline.

How can Goaley help me save for a trip?

Goaley: Savings Goal Tracker is built for goals like this: a name, a target, a date and a photo. It splits what is left into weekly, every-two-weeks or monthly contributions and shows the next amount. For one goal, see how much to save each month, or use the savings goal calculator. For several smaller costs, see sinking funds.
